My Fitness Journey
In 2002, I really took a serious look at my life. I was wearing a 4x in clothing and around 185 pounds. All my hobbies were sedentary. I knew that if I kept going the way I was going, I wasn't going to live very long and I would have serious health issues.
I'm a writer and I love to read. I enjoy quilting, knitting, sewing, and crochet. This is all fine but this isn't healthy to sit for long periods of time. It contributes to being overweight and having health problems.
I made the decision to change my life. I bought a CD from Think Right Now called "I love exercising now!" I let it play in the background once a day and didn't pay much attention to it. In about a month, when I looked at the newspaper and saw a 5K race, I decided to participate. I had never done this before in my life. I called youngest son, Daniel and asked him if he would walk with me and he did. He's always so supportive and kind. I made decision that even if I had to be carried off in a stretcher, I was going to participate and try. I finished and I was fine.
This got me going and I wanted more. I finished around seven 5K's. I participated in Volkswalks and completed over 15 Volkswalks. I participated in a Portland to Coast Volkswalk Team called "Red Hot and Rolling!" in 2003. I signed up for the Portland Marathon in 2003 as a Volkswalk participant and completed 18 miles of the Portland Marathon. My son, Ben walked with me to the end of the 18 miles. Ben is an elite distance runner who last year came in the top 10 in the Seattle Marathon and Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon. He's always supportive and kind to me.
I joined Timberhill Athletic Club in Corvallis, Oregon. I overcame my fear of deep water and sort of learned to swim. I loved taking hydrofit classes, Body Pump classes, and Zumba.
In May of 2011, my husband of 39 years passed away from cancer. My whole life changed. I lost my home, moved to Seattle, and started over.
I made the decision that I would put health and fitness first in my life. I don't take any medications. I take vitamins. I try to eat healthy and exercise. I'm not perfect. I still am overweight and I'm 66 years old.
I didn't always have weight problems. Throughout high school and college, I weighed around 135 to 150 pounds. In 1978, life changed when my husband got sick and I started to struggle with my weight. I had five kids, the best kids in the world and I loved spending time with them. When they were growing up, I exercised with Richard Simmons and Sweating to the Oldies. I bought everything Richard sold. From the mid 80's to 90's, I lost the weight twice. I was a member of two gyms in Salem, Oregon. Now I'm struggling again with my weight and am determined to lose weight with Zumba.
I love Zumba. It has changed my life. I'm grateful for the opportunity to teach Zumba Gold and want to teach more classes. I want to teach more Zumba Gold classes, Zumba Gold chair, Aqua Zumba, and Zumba Toning. This is important to me because I want to stay healthy and fit as I get older and I want to show my students the fun of Zumba.
It would be so much fun to teach Zumba Gold on a cruise ship! Can you imagine sailing all over the world teaching Zumba Gold! Wow!
I don't know anyone who can't wait to go to the gym to do 100 situps but I know several women my age who can't wait to take Zumba classes. I know women my age who take 2 and 3 Zumba classes a day. They belong to more than one gym so they can do this! Zumba is fun. It's a party!
I am proud to be a Zumba instructor and teach Zumba. I am proud of what Zumba stands for. I am proud to have met Beto Perez, the creator of Zumba. He's such a kind and good man. He should win the Nobel Peace Prize for uniting the world with Zumba.
